Autism & Aspergers PE Support
Learn2 Director Becki Coombe previously worked in a Midlands secondary school, which catered exclusively for Students on the Autistic Spectrum, including Aspergers Syndrome. During her time as the Physical Education Co-ordinator, Becki developed numerous teaching resources and a variety of practical teaching processes designed to minimise anxiety and maximise participation and learning within physical activity teaching environments. During her time at the school, Becki completed a Masters level study researching the effect of heart rate intensity during physical exercise on autistic stereotyped behaviours.
Physical Education Lessons
Learn2 realises that lessons delivered to Autistic and Aspergers Students take effect in many forms including but not limited to those below:
- one/few Autistic/Aspergers Student(s) within a large mainstream class
- numerous Autistic/Aspergers Students taught by non-specialist subject staff
- Autistic/Aspergers Students taught by a Teacher new to SEN
Learn2 provides a specific service of visiting a school, observing standard teaching practices and listening to the problems being encountered before offering advice, techniques and physical resources for the Teacher to keep and try with their class/es.
Following the visit, Learn2 will follow-up with a telephone call in the first instance and wherever welcomed by the school, re-visit to observe developments, offer possible suggestions for further improvement, or provide alternatives where a tried method has not worked.
Masters Level Dissertation Study
The previously described study involved observing a small population of secondary Students. Each Student was observed within a lesson in a classroom setting and the number of pre-defined Autistic stereotyped behaviours e.g. rocking movements, involuntary sounds, etc, were recorded over a ten-minute period. The Student then participated in five minutes of physical activity before returning to their previous lesson setting and the number of Autistic stereotyped behaviours recorded once again. The Study investigated links between the exercising heart rates and differences in occurrence of Autistic stereotyped behaviours pre and post exercise.
Learn2 strongly supports research and developments that may, in time, be used to enhance Autistic and Aspergers person’s lifestyles, as well as that of the Parents, Carers and Practitioners who work hard on their behalf. With this in mind, Learn2 has made this study available to download, just fill in the form below to have it emailed to you:
